Shepherdress

DSC_03693.jpg picture by Addikins

I made this dress as a prototype a couple weeks ago and I'm not so sure how I feel about it. It's made out of an old flannel sheet (not really fuzzy anymore, but still definitely flannel--but the sheep print was too cute!), so it's a bit bulky, especially where the two-layer skirt connects to the bodice. However, there are a few things I love about it. Mainly: it fits. Perfectly. This was my first experiment inserting a shirred elastic panel in the back and I am in love with it! It's fitted without being tight and uncomfortable, a difficult happy medium to reach. It also means it can fit varied sizes, which is ideal for selling. Also, I love sheep, so this style combined with the print makes me feel like a shepherdess!

Haha, shaggy bangs. I'm less like a shepherdess and more like a sheep dog with hair like that!

I went down to take pictures on the rocks, which proved to be rather difficult, especially with that wind!

My face is in there somewhere. So, what do you think of the dress? While I said it was a prototype, I might not make any for the shop. I'm not sold on the design yet. I'd love to hear what you think!

  1. I like it as a skirt, because the pouffyness could be very lolita. I say retain the bodice as a prototype, in case you need to rip it apart as a pattern.

    Sheepies!

  2. Wow, I didn't even recognize you in the thumbnail on my "blogs to read" when I saw the first picture of you! Your bangs, once again, are just too cute! I LOVE them. I love that dress. Love the pattern, the length and I love the bodice! If the level of poof on the skirt is too much, you could always put a belt with it. Or maybe try pleating next time? But all in all, I love the dress. It's very cute!

  3. I love love love this dress. Too cute! I'm one of those people that would handle the crazy 'poofiness' and 'flannelness' to achieve cuteness and so would many other people. I say keep working at it and use something other than flannel? The design is cute.

  6. Wow. I really really love the style of that dress. Not fond of the sheep pattern or that it is flannel cause it seems like it could get hot. but the style is soooooo cute. Could you please please make a tutorial? :D

  7. that is so pretty! I'm not really sure I like the sheep and the flannel, as it seems sort of nightgowny, but I absolutely love the design and I would definitelly buy it if you put it in you shop!

  8. I think it's an adorable dress, and some of the bulk you're seeing would go down if you used a lighter weight fabric, or perhaps played with 2 different kinds of fabric for the skirt. the fit is great, and even the cutsie print isn't bad since it's more of a sophisticated cut, it makes it more of a FUN dress than a serious dress.

  11. Thanks for the feedback (& lovely compliments), everyone! ♥

Hannah - You are just the darling-est. Thank you!

Kyra - Thanks! I'm definitely skipping the flannel next time, haha. This was just what was on hand.

SmartyArtist & Ruth - Thank you both! It is mega-flattering to be asked for a tutorial, but I don't quite know if I can do it! Maybe if I did a tutorial first on how to drape a pattern on yourself? It's just hard with something so fitted, especially if I'm squeezing it into a few minutes of video. I'll let you know if I do get to it!

Jessica - Ooo I like the suggestion of using two different kinds of fabric! It could be really fun to play with that.

Again, thanks for the compliments! You guys are so sweet.
