Threadbanger Guild -- on Threadbanger, the show!

I made a video for the Threadbanger guild last summer all about tagging your items properly. Yesterday, Threadbanger posted a Viewer Takeover video, & Maniacal Mickey and I are in it! I'm a little hesitant to post it because, well, it's hard to watch yourself on video! But Mickey is adorable, it's worth watching for her. (& this is good exposure for the guild.)

Remember, you can visit the Threadbanger Guild HERE to check out all the shops.

"Rockstar" One-Shoulder Top

So, I cleaned my sewing room [insert gasps here] & ended up using the last of a couple of my older fabrics from my collection to make this top. I'm really on a one-shoulder kick right now. I also really, really love puffy sleeves. The puffier, the better, right? I'm pretty sure that's a rule.

I just listed it in my shop!

What else have I been making? Shhh, Christmas presents! You'll see the soon enough, and all I'll say is that I'm really, really pleased with how they're turning out. Here's a hint: I've been knitting. And felting. And cooking.

How about you guys? Are you doing handmade Christmas gifts this year? Buying on Etsy? I know most people are cutting back, & going handmade--or at least, supporting independent artists--is a terrific way of doing that. If you're lost for ideas, Threadbanger, TB Forums, and Craftster are some of my favorite places to go! There are oodles of tutorials to help you out.

"Hey, I recognize that sheet!" (Summer Dress!)

...Because some things are, undoubtedly, quite recognizable for sheets. Even if you've turned them into dresses.

This was me, sitting down one evening (see: 9:45 PM) and thinking, "I don't have enough dresses. If I'm going to go through with this plan of wearing dresses and heels all summer, I will have to make more."

So I sewed until after midnight, and finished the zipper right after breakfast the next morning. Yes, I am freakishly obsessive about my sewing. No, there is nothing unusual about this.

So there you have it: another dress to go with my yellow shoes! It was only after I cut everything out that I realized the skirt portion was more faded than the top. The belt kind of breaks it up, but maybe I'll screen print on it to draw the eye away. I'm awfully excited to have new dresses to wear this summer!

Also, a small note on the watermarks: There was a bit of drama over on Threadbanger when a guy stole photos of someone else's work and claimed they were his own--and had people believing him for a few months until it was discovered. While I don't mean to flatter myself into thinking someone would want to do this to me, I would really rather not take the risk. I'm trying to watermark my photos from now on, although sometimes I do forget. So... that's why. ^^

Featured Artist: Checkered Heart

This time around I get to blog about the super talented, incredibly sweet Amie. Her shop, Checkered Heart, is filled with an array of totally sweet items, from bags to shirts to earrings. My favorite, without a doubt, is the Sewing Machine Tote.

Isn't it fantastic?? As a huge lover of sewing machines & all things vintage (it probably goes without saying, but especially vintage sewing machines), this caught my eye immediately. She also has a t-shirt printed with the same image. She has such awesome stuff. You should definitely check her out! (<--Click there for her shop, or the image above.)

& as always, you can find out more on the TBGuild here,
and find all our shops at our Etsy profile.

Mother's Day Bags

I made a couple items for the Threadbanger Guild Treasuries for May!

This is a scrappy wallet. I had the outer fabric all done up from a failed vest, so it was rather simple to make, actually. The inside is a recycled sheet, the outside all my pink & green scraps-- you will recognize most of it, I'm sure! I've had some of this fabric from when I was 11 or 12, believe it or not. (Seriously. Fabric is really hard to throw out!)

This is a record purse. I haven't posted my other two on here yet, because I don't have all the pictures on this computer, but I have made two others. I'm not gonna lie and say that they're fun, but I really love the result. The actual bag for this one was already pretty much made, which was really the only reason I got this done. I only had to sew the records on--which is, actually, the hardest part. It's more difficult than you'd think! I don't have a solid pattern made yet for these, so sometimes the bag is a little smaller than the record, but even if it's a fraction off it's extremely hard to sew it to the record. ((Sore fingers afterward.))

& if you were curious, the holes were made in the record using an old bent sewing machine needle, a candle, and pliers.

They're both listed on my website if you want more pictures! www.mateycouture.etsy.com

ThreadBanger Guild & A Featured Artist

Hello, darlings! I'm here to promote a FANTASTIC group of artists. We're called the Threadbanger Guild (we'll be an official Etsy Team after the 15th), and our creations range from amazing works of clay to gorgeous jewelry to awe-worthy clothing and epic purses.

If you're on Threadbanger (which you really should be!) & you have an Etsy, you should join up! Check out the thread on how to join & why you should, & the advertisement guide (put together by yours truly!), and please check out our shops!!
Or go to Etsy.com & search "tbguild" to find our listings. And scroll down this page--that's right, below the Blog Archive--to get a quick peek at what we've made.

You know how I've been dying to have better photos with a more artsy, raw feel? I found the perfect example of what I want while sifting around on Etsy today.

♥Photo & Dress by the amazing SarahSeven

Yes. That is what I want. Click on the link above to view her other incredible creations! Seriously, folks. Look at the lighting! The unfinished wall behind her! The gorgeous model! And, of course, the main focus point: the dress! (Incidentally, I have the same fabric. ^^) Really, this is art. What I would give to have photos styled in a similar way!

Alright, you surely have enough inspiration from all these incredible artists that you'll survive without my creations for a little while longer. I'm off to work on a dress I've been putting off for over a year. You'll surely see photos of it soon!

Spring Collection: A Preview!

Never before seen on Matey Couture: Addie actually smiling as she models! (Oy, third person rocks.)

No, really, I think this is the first time. I posted a picture of me smiling a few posts down, but it wasn't a modeling shot. Here I tried to smile winningly at the camera.

After:

Details: Capped sleeves, keyhole in back, scoop neck, tabs at lower sides. I fell in love with the print the minute I saw it, but hoarded the tee until I could find the perfect fabric to match it. Turns out Hancock was having a sale on cotton jersey knit, and they had this color-- it was so perfect! I'll probably add buttons on the tabs & at the top of the keyhole, but I haven't found the right ones to put on it yet. I'll be taking real photos of this for my shop on my vacation.... you'll just have to wait to see the awesomeness, but know that it'll be epic, especially because of where I'll be taking the photos. :)

Oh, and I entered it into Project Threadbanger & got second place!! (By the way, I won last month, but by default because nobody else entered. :\ Still, it was exciting.)

Hope you're staying warm, wherever your location may be! Here in MN it's crisp & below zero--and I can't wait for t-shirt weather!

Ren fest costume!

I went to the Renaissance the second weekend of this month with my friend Sophie. It was awesome! Unfortunately, I never did get a chance to make a costume from Prince Caspian like I'd been hoping, but I improvised with what I had to make my outfit. While Sophie was at school the week before we went (I was staying with her for a mini vacation), I made this dress out of a couple twin-sized bottom sheets. I'd meant to grab the larger size topsheets, but I made do quite well.

The white chemise was extremely simple-- I make it huge and then gathered the neckline with elastic. The sleeves are also extra large, gathered at the top to fit the armhole, and gathered at the bottom with elastic. When pushed up to my elbows, it poofs out over, creating an awesome look. The skirt wasn't very full, but since it was just an underskirt, it was okay in appearances-- just annoying to the wearer. :)

The over dress was loosely based on a bodice Sophie'd purchased at the festival a few years back. I made it smaller, lengthened it for the skirt, and added only two bones, on either side of the lacing. The fit is pretty good, but I do need to correct the back. It worked perfectly for the day, though, although my footwear (black and white polkadotted converse...) was probably not appropriate. :P

Epic action shot!!
I wish we'd remembered out cameras-- and as of yet I do not have a photo of Sophie's costume, but I can describe it because it was awesome. She went as a faerie, and we made wings with coathangers, tights and ribbon using the tutorial at Threadbanger. She put her bodice over a poofy sleeved shirt (styled much like my chemise) and a tie-skirt for her underskirt. The overskirt was a cloth belt we pinned a billion scarves and fabric scraps to, making it very full and poofy. She had the best ideas for the costume, it was awesome. I'll bug her about sending me pictures, how does that sound??
I'll be posting every-day wear soon, so keep checking back!

Arrrr, it's called Matey Couture for a reason!

Just because I've been sewing more everyday wear does not, by any measure, mean that I've lost my passion for costumes, historic and otherwise. I fulfilled a dream of mine this past week in making a pirate hat. I think I finally have my pirate outfit mostly complete, and I can't express to you how much that satisfies me. I've been working on it for a couple years, adding a piece here and making one there.

My friend and I were shopping at Ragstock when, on the Super Sale rack, we came across a bunch of brown fake leather pants for 3$ each. We immediately bought a pair each, and when I got home one of the first things I made was this hat. I used Corrine's Halloween Pirate tutorial from http://www.threadbanger.com/. (I'm sorry I don't have the direct link right now. I'll find it when I have more time), and while I had a bit of trouble with the rolling of the sides, it turned out alright. I still hope to make a proper styled one with wool felt and buckram, but until I've gained the millinery super skillz to try that, this one will work.

Out of this outfit I've made the pants, the vest, and the hat. The shirt came from the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, given to me from a friend, the sash is a window thingy, the coin belt from a local market, the boots from target, and the jewelry I found randomly around my room. The flintlock is entirely a prop-- from http://www.museumreplicas.com/.

I was asked by someone on Threadbanger to make a tutorial for my hoodie, so that's how I spent my afternoon. It took me 2 1/4 hours to make this hoodie, and just as long to make the tutorial. Go figure. I'm extremely pleased with this one, though: it's soft, stretchy, and a very fun print. Also, because it went so fast, I'll be able to keep my prices pretty low for these, which is good news for my customers!

The link to the tutorial is here. It was my first tutorial, and I'd taken about 40 pictures for it. Heh, I ended up only using 25 or so, but it's still quite a lot. I hope it helps people out!

Other Threadbanger news... I'd posted several of my projects in the forum, and I found out today that I'm going to be featured in their newsletter thanks to my skull hoodie!! I'm really honored. It comes out tomorrow, so I can't wait to see what it says!

I'm pretty excited about another thing... I designed a prom dress! For me! I'll post pictures of the sketch when I scan it, and then eventually the real thing. But I decided upon a wine colored satin for the color. It's going to rock. I really, really want to make this jacket to go with it, but I don't know how I'd sew a jacket and a prom dress in just two and a half weeks. Sounds just crazy enough for me to try, but the prom dress has got to come first. ;)
